All Federal Benefit Payments Will Be Paid Electronically by March 2013 By March 1, 2013, everyone receiving federal benefits by paper check, such as social security or VA benefits, will need to switch to electronic payments - direct deposit to a bank or credit union account or to the Direct Express® Debit MasterCard® card. If you do not enroll in electronic payments by March 1, 2013 you will receive your federal benefits via the Direct Express® card, so that you will not experience any interruption in payment. Those applying for federal benefits on or after May 1, 2011 will receive their payments electronically starting with their first payment.
